I can remember the very first management training film I ever watched. It was called "GOYA". I remember it in particular because it was so very funny, but also because it had a strong theme. So strong in fact, that I've never forgotten it.
So, what was funny about it?
Well, it starred John Cleese of Monty Python fame. Need I say more? In fact it was made by the production company he used to own that specialised in management training films like this.
The opening sequence showed John sitting at his desk, he was playing the part of the manager of an engineering company I think. Anyway, on the wall behind him was a picture containing the single word 'GOYA' in large black type, if you can call it a word.
It was soon made clear in the film that 'GOYA' was an acronym for "Get Off Your Arse". I hope you're not offended by my using the word 'arse'. I did contemplate replacing the 'r' and 's' characters with asterisks to avoid any offence, but it looked confusing so I just wrote arse instead. Whoops, I just wrote it again what a silly arse!
The principle behind 'GOYA' was that managers can't manage effectively stuck behind a desk. They have to get amongst the workforce now and again to keep up with what's going on. However, I'm going to apply it slightly differently as a principal in running your own business.
At this point I'm reminded of a particularly relevant quote which goes something like: "Some people dream of worthy accomplishments whilst other people stay awake to do them."
I hope you're starting to get the idea of where 'GOYA' fits in. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people online who dream of having their own successful business. They may post questions at forums about starting a business, they may subscribe to a multitude of different newsletters, they may even buy lots of ebooks and in some cases rent web space. But they never ever get round to taking that first real step in making their business a reality.
Similarly, they may have started their business with a flourish of enthusiasm, but not followed through to the point of actually selling anything or making any real money. Whether it's fear, procrastination, lack of confidence I don't know? What I do know, is that you're never going to achieve success unless you 'GOYA' and do something about it!
Yes it's easy to find things to waste your time on. One of the most obvious is becoming a 'couch potato' in front of a string of vacuous TV shows. But can you ever be comfortable in that position, knowing that you could be achieving so much more? believe me, you'll be much more comfortable wasting time in front of the TV when you've already got a bundle of cash in the bank!
Are you willing to do what it takes to be successful?
If you are, don't just sit there dreaming about your success. 'GOYA' today and do something about it!
Be successful.
